ASS KICKING KICKSTARTERS: MENTHU

Image
Been a while since I publicly plugged a kickstarter on the Vundablog . So here's a return to a recurring segment I call Ass Kicking Kickstarters. This Menthu comic looks very promising. The amount of detail and time put into the Kickstarter page give me a lot of hope for this comic series. Send them as much support as you can share their Kickstarter they have less than a week to go and a lot of catching up to do. The talent involved looks top notch and it's cool to see a cool new hero of color. Help Robert Roach achieve his dream. Here's a graphic I made to help promote the campaign, so you can share it and post it on your social media outlet of choice.

COMIC BOOK REVIEW: HEADLOCKED

Image
I've trumpeted love for the best wrestling comic ever Headlocked before on this here Vundablog and I intend to trumpet it some more with a formal review of the Headlocked collected edition A single Step. The first image of the story is the drip of blood into a puddle of blood, and the narrator asking if we've ever had a dream. Headlocked follows the life and career of Mike Hartmann a college dropout turned aspiring wrestler. Mike Hartmann is a former theater major so Mike Hartmann looks at wrestling from a dramatic perspective. He illuminates the subtleties of the performance known as wrestling. The book is very poetic in the way that it describes the story of a wrestling show and its performers. Mike Hartmann gets so enthralled from watching a live wrestling show he changes the course of his life and pursues his dream. In the collection we don't se much of Mike actually wrestling. It is as the title says "A Single Step" in his career, from leaving school ...

COMIC BOOK REVIEW: TOMMY

Image
Here's a review for another book put our by local publisher Creature Entertainment . This book is called Tommy , and it's not about a pinball wizard . Tommy is the simple story of a very disturbed boy. As the comic opens Tommy the little boy in questioned is scared and hiding in a closet. He goes to make a dash for his room and just as he's about to reach success he's attacked by a menacing rabbit. This rabbit is Tommy's psychosis. Tommy's rabbit is about to do something unthinkable to Tommy when his mother interrupts and saves Tommy or his pet rabbit from a disturbing fate.   We're then shown Tommy's school teacher and principal talking about the problems of Tommy. The book builds to Tommy's first murder. First off, the art in the book by Juan Navarro is stylish and fluid, each page is unique and dynamic. The art elevates a simple story and makes it feel complex and deep. The writing credits go to John Ulloa and Al Bondiga who deliver a p...

COMIC BOOK REVIEW: RAVENOUS

Image
So I'm all hyped for the upcoming Florida Super Con and I've decided to review some of the books I picked up last year. Local comic book publisher Creature Entertainment has put out Ravenous . Ravenous isn't just a werewolf comic. It is a badass werewolf comic. The main character is chasing or being chased by something mysterious, turns out it's were-wolves. There's a vicious fight with a werewolf that runs from page 3 to page 8, that is intense and cool as our hero uses only a knife to repel the supernatural beast. Intrigue rises when the people of a road stop are caught in the midst of this werewolf attack. The comic has the feel of one of my favorite movies From Dusk Till Dawn. The art by Jose Varese works perfectly with the tone of the book. The art is the very essence of cool in the book as everyone looks good even the angry monstrous werewolves. The story by John Ulloa is pure simple fun. This comic lets you really appreciate the savagery and power of w...

COMICBOOK REVIEW: FCBD SIMPSONS BY BONGO COMICS

Image
On Free ComicBook Day I picked up Bongo Comics Free For All aka the Simpsons comic. So I thought even though it's not Thursday yet we'll talk some Simpsons. First of all the cover is full of all sorts of awesome. It depicts Bart and his school chums running to a leprechaun's pot of gold full of comics. The comics have awesome names like Biclops, Superior Squad, Space Mutant Chronicles, Weasel Woman, Captain Squid, Radioactive Ape, House of Plasmo, Lil Kneesocks, True Larva, Leopard Lady, Quest Time, and more. There are leprechauns guarding the comics pot and one of them bears a striking resemblance to Comicbook guy. The first story in this free Simpsons anthology follows Bart and Milhouse as they attempt to get super powers. Milhouse is experimented on by Bart as they explore the accidental ways super heroes get their powers ala Spider-man and the Fantastic Four. Milhouse takes a beating in this short but it's okay because he's just Milhouse. ...

COMICBOOK REVIEW: Kidnapping Kevin Smith by Chad Blakely

Image
On Free Comicbook Day I made some purchases. One of them was Kidnapping Kevin Smith by Chad Blakely. I had read about this comic online once before because of the fabulous Mike Allred cover. So when I saw this book in a box marked half off, I was stoked. Firstly the cover by Mike Allred is simple, dramatic, and engaging. I like that the lettering of the title is reminiscent of a ransom note and of the Clerks poster font (Kevin Smith's indy classic). The story opens with Kevin closing out a sold out Q&A. A couple of the attendees head over to a cafe to order some coffees and debate the quality of Kevin Smith's show. It turns into an argument over Kevin Smith's merit. Ralph goes on a rant about how Kevin Smith is a hack to which his friend Jeff defends Kevin Smith for the rest of the night. The friends continue on with their mundane lives. Both of them working at a comic shop and going to movies together. Until they watch a movie about kidnapping. That...

COMICBOOK REVIEW: What I.F.

Image
Today I'm reviewing What I.F. by writer D.J. Strong, pencils by Jeramy Hobbs, and inks by Zach Basset and Jeramy Hobbs put out by local comic book publisher Cosmic Times . I picked up this book at Florida Supercon 2013 and have embarrassingly not cracked it open for a read till now. It's been sitting at the bottom of my read pile and I decided to pull it up. The comic is about an Imaginary Friend (the I.F. in What I.F.) whose lost his person and is reminiscing on their time together as he prepares to move on. The I.F. (whose name I won't reveal to encourage you to by this book and enjoy the magic of it) starts out standing over Penelope's (his person) sleeping body. She has taken anti-depressants and this will mean the end of Penelope being able to see him. The story follows the I.F. coming to terms with his persons new life.  The story is filled with a sense of tragedy mixed with hopefulness. The hopefulness comes from the fact that it's about im...

COMICBOOK REVIEW: Silver Surfer #1

Image
It's comic book review time and I've got a hankering to talk about Silver Surfer #1. Silver Surfer is a comic book character that always appealed to me as a kid, he's got a cool look that is unique. He has one of the best modes of transportation in all of comics, he has a strong power set, and an interesting origin. The reality however of his cosmic tragedy however was never that entertaining to me. The Fantastic Four movie he was in , and his appearance on Super Hero Squad (where he talks like a surfer dude) hasn't helped his cause either. However, he has all the makings of a great character and I've always appreciated him. So with the right creative team maybe he can shine brighter than ever. Usually I'm all about DC comics, but when one of my favorite comic book artists on the planet, Mike Allred, has work at Marvel. I must follow. I've spoken briefly about how Mr. Allred drew me into the world of comics with his glorious cover for X-Statix ...

COMICBOOK REVIEW: Wolverine and the X-men #17

Image
One man's art is responsible for me getting into comics. That man is Mike Allred . Mike Allred is an amazing artist. I've tried to share his art with others before but they couldn't quite understand the magic of Allred's art. Allred draws the comics and his wife Laura adds the color which is such a vital element to his style. It is timeless he makes every character seem like their most classical interpretation. I can't get enough of seeing him draw my favorite characters. I was in a used bookstore and the year was 2003 or 2004 maybe even 2005 it's hard to say. This used bookstore had some old comics on the wall. Three of those comics were X-statix #1, 2, and 3 written by Pete Milligan and drawn by the master Mike Allred. This comic sung to me from the rack. I was always a big fan of the X-men and religiously followed the 90's X-men the Animated series . In Elementary and Middle School I collected cards based on DC and Marvel comics. My favorite cards...

COMICBOOK REVIEW: Justice League of America Issues 1 & 2 and also Justice League #18

Image
In Justice League of America #1 Geoff Johns and David Finch take us through the introduction of the American wing of the Justice League. The driving force of this first arc seems to be the machinations of a Secret Society of super-villains. The issue is basically centered around Steve Trevor (Wonder Woman's one time love interest) working under Amanda Waller (who I'm disappointed to see in her new 52 incarnation is now a thin woman). Waller wants the JLA to form as a balance of power in case the actual Justice League gets too powerful and tries to conquer the world or something. The issue has the choosing and breakdown of the team. Trevor and Waller design a team to match up with every members power set.

COMICBOOK REVIEW: VIBE #1 and 2

Image
I enjoyed the heck out of Vibe #1. To be honest, I'm a huge Geoff Johns fan, and have recently realized I'm apparently also a fan of Andrew Kreisberg . I enjoyed Andrew's work on Green Arrow/ Black Canary where he introduced a pretty cool villainess named Cupid . Here Kreisberg and Geoff are trying to reinvigorate the most wacky character of the Justice League Detroit crew of the 70's (for more info on that check out comics 101 here ). I also have dug his work on Mission Hill, Eli Stone, The Simpsons, and Justice League to name a few. The writers embrace the wacky world of Vibe and set the book in modern day Detroit. The book ties in with the first storyline of the new 52's Justice League when they stopped an incursion by Darkseid into their world. Vibe was born from this event. Being caught in the blast of a boom tube granted him with special gifts and abilities which make him uniquely suited to finding and stopping Darkseid's threats. This book was so g...

COMICBOOK REVIEW: Sledge-Hammer 44 and Hellboy in Hell

Image
I don't pick up too many Darkhorse comics at the moment, but I will always give a chance to a new Mike Mignola comic. Sledge-Hammer 44 #1 is a World War 2 comic that could be boiled down to robot vs. Nazi robot. In this first issue there isn't much dialogue for the titular character of Sledge-Hammer. He basically gets dropped in to a battlefield hidden in a bomb. He fries some Nazi's with some electrical bolts, kicks some ass, then gets bested by an even bigger more retro looking Nazi-robot, and then gets saved by his back up, a platoon of American soldiers.

COMICBOOK REVIEW BATMAN FALSE FACES

Image
BATMAN FALSE FACES is a collection of  DC comics stories all written by Brian K Vaughan . Brian K Vaughan is famous for working on three seasons of one of my all time favorite shows,  Lost and also more importantly for writing on one of my favorite comic book series of all time Y THE LAST MAN .  Brian K Vaughan introduces Batman False Faces himself and sets up the context of the book and the many stories it pulls from. All the stories are gloriously self contained so they don't really need to fit into any certain continuity. I assume Vaughan does this so that they are, as Batman should be, easily accessible to all audiences. There are four stories in the collection of varying lengths. Three of the four are pulled from issues of Batman he did, and the other story is a two parter from a Wonder Woman run that happens to star a Batman villain. All four stories play with the themes of identity and metamorphoses as the title Fal...

3 Questions About Comics and Me

Image
So Nick tagged me . Luckily some of these questions I was going to post about anyway. 1) What was the first comic you remember reading? I fully realize how lame this sounds. Des pite my brothers having a huge comic collection, this is the first one I remember owning and trying to read. I couldn't figure out how to read the panels at the tender age of 5, so I don't remeber much of the story and don't really care.  2) What was the first comic that made you realize that you might be in this for the long haul? I might take some flack for this but it was acutually New Avenegrs. I got into comics around May of 2004. My comics budget was very tight and my cousin had also been buying comics. He read more marvel and I read DC. So i'd borrow his copies of New Avengers. Around issue 8 he quit buying comics and I inherited his New Avnegers collection and realized I didn't want to stop reading the book. So it made me think I might be into this for a whil...
